Demystifying EU apparel imports; India & Bangladesh Trends

EU has recently released new statistics for Apparel Imports from various countries, including India and Bangladesh. Although, EU registered an overall growth in apparel imports in terms of value during the first 10 months, ie Jan-Oct 2015, segregating the data category-wise between India and Bangladesh and comparing it against previous year’s corresponding review period (Jan-Oct 2014) data, unveils some key trends in these countries in categories like Legwear, Babies wear, Ladies dresses etc.

An analysis of the data boils down to the following conclusions:
Overall, the legwear category shows a positive growth in terms of value, but a decline in volume of (-)5.66 per cent.
Meanwhile, comparing the exports of India and Bangladesh with EU in the legwear segment suggests that Bangladesh registered tremendous growth of 47.80 per cent (in value) & 21.67 per cent in volume. But India witnessed a growth of only 2.31 per cent in value, but a decrease in volume by 1.00 per cent. in this category.

Bangladeshi exporters have registered a positive growth in exports of jackets and blazers,  trousers and ladies suits. The data suggests that Bangladesh’s apparel sector is moving towards more structured garments.

Investing in the ladies suit category is likely to be a profitable segment, since the category showed a growth in both quantity as well as value of exports, by 13.20 per cent and 42.60 per cent respectively.
Owing to the decline in imports, babies wear registered a setback in volume for India, whereas ladies dresses, a leading category in India, saw a positive growth by 3.2 per cent in quantity and 8.91 per cent gains in value.
